Boarding Services

Hicksville Boarding Services

Bird Girl Pet Services offers specialized boarding for birds, small mammals, and reptiles out of my Hicksville home.

Every guest receives species-appropriate care, a clean environment, and daily monitoring from an experienced exotic animal professional.

An annual wellness exam from a qualified exotics vet is required for all pets, prior to boarding.

Bird Boarding

Your bird will board in a dedicated room equipped with an air purifier and filtered airflow. I maintain the temperature with an air conditioner, and a generator is on hand for power outages. â€‹â€‹â€‹

Daily care includes:

  • Lights on between 6 and 7 a.m. with a foraging treat

  • Cleaning and monitoring throughout the day

  • A fresh afternoon meal of fruits, vegetables, Nutriberries, nuts, pellets, and seeds (based on the species and client preferences)

  • Lights off between 6 and 7 p.m.

  • Out-of-cage time is offered on a case-by-case basis

The safety of all pets in my care is my priority. Flighted birds or birds that cannot safely stay on a play gym will remain in their cage to prevent contact with other birds.

Bird Boarding Rates

Small Mammal Boarding

Rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas are housed in my climate-controlled living space using my own enclosures.

Single rabbits are set up with visual barriers between them so they cannot see one another. Bonded pairs are given a larger floor area with both rug and tile surfaces, separated from other guests by a tall gate.

Chinchillas and rabbits have access to cooling surfaces (granite stones and ceramic tiles), and the room has a dedicated air conditioning unit.

Daily care includes:

  • Morning and evening feedings

  • Midday enrichment with hay tubes, apple wood sticks, and human interaction, and regular cleaning

  • Regularly cleaned litter boxes

  • Guinea pig fleece changed 2-3 times per week

  • Oxbow Timothy Hay, Oxbow adult essential pellets for rabbits and guinea pigs, and fresh greens

All rabbits must be spayed or neutered. Unaltered rabbits cannot be accepted.

Reptile Boarding

Bearded dragons, tortoises, geckos, and chameleons board in my home using my own enclosures with species-appropriate heating (ceramic heat emitters, heat lamps), UVB lighting, and misting as needed.

Do you have a reptile not listed above? Please contact me if you have another small reptile species you'd like to board. If I can accommodate them, I will.

Daily care includes:

  • UVB and heating on between 6 and 7 a.m.

  • Feeding as required

  • Midday cleaning, misting, and soaks as needed for certain species

  • Lights off in the evening

I supply greens and fruit as needed. Owners must provide any live feeders (crickets, dubia roaches, etc.) their reptile requires, in a Critter Keeper-style container, along with appropriate food for them.

All substrate is replaced and enclosures are cleaned with F10 veterinary disinfectant between guests.

What I Don't Board

I do not board ferrets or any species that is illegal to own in the area.

Animals with certain heart conditions or birds too stressed by medication administration may not be eligible for boarding. All guests must have current vet records on file.

Staying In Touch

I tailor communication to what works best for you. Some clients prefer a "no news is good news" approach, while others like a daily photo update. Please let me know your preference when you book.

Health & Safety

All boarding guests are required to have a current wellness exam and, for birds, a vet-issued health certificate prior to their stay.

These requirements protect every animal in my care. Because boarding birds share airspace in a home environment, health documentation helps reduce the risk of contagious diseases like psittacosis, PBFD, and Pacheco's disease, which birds can carry without visible symptoms.

If a boarding animal shows signs of illness during their stay, I will contact the owner immediately and schedule a vet visit.

I maintain relationships with avian and exotic veterinarians in the area and can refer to my network or defer to your vet, depending on the situation.

For small mammals showing signs of GI stasis, I monitor them closely and seek veterinary care if there is no improvement within 12 hours.

For reptiles that refuse food, I stay in close communication with the owner and schedule a vet visit if needed.

If a bird becomes too stressed during boarding, which is rare, I will contact the owner and request that an emergency contact pick up the bird.

All tools, enclosures, and surfaces are cleaned with F10 veterinary disinfectant between every guest.
