Some reptiles travel well and do great in a boarding setting. Others are better off staying home. 

 

Large or complex enclosures, bioactive setups, animals that are sensitive to environmental changes, and pets that can't be transferred to a temporary habitat are all good candidates for in-home reptile sitting.

 

If your animal's setup is difficult to replicate or your pet does best with minimal disruption, in-home care lets them stay in the enclosure you've built, on the schedule you've established. I'll come to your home and follow your care plan there.

 

I'm fully insured and bonded, and I treat your home with the same care I give your animals.

What's included in pet sitting for reptiles?

 

Reptile sitting is all about observation and consistency.

 

During each visit, I check:

​

• Basking zone and cool side temperatures

• Humidity levels and moist hides, with misting or adjustments as needed

• UVB and heat lamp function

• Fresh water

• Feeding per your schedule

• Spot cleaning and substrate condition

• Enclosure security (latches, screen tops, doors)

• Your reptile's posture, movement, skin, eyes, and overall appearance

 

If you request it, after every visit I'll send you a photo and text update so you know how your reptile is doing and what I observed. If something looks off, you'll hear from me right away.

 

Your Reptile's Routine, Done Right

Every reptile has their own care routine, and I'll follow your pet's routine closely. 

 

I manage heating, lighting, feeding, handling when appropriate, and enclosure care while keeping an eye out for signs that something may be wrong, like dehydration, breathing problems, trouble shedding, or stress.

 

I provide in-home pet sitting for popular reptiles like:

Feeding and Diet

 

I follow your feeding instructions exactly, whether your reptile eats fresh greens, fruit, prepared diets, or frozen/thawed prey. I do not feed live vertebrate prey.

 

If your animal eats invertebrate feeders like dubia roaches, crickets, or mealworms, I can maintain and gut-load them during your trip. I'm comfortable with calcium dusting, vitamin supplementation schedules, and any diet prep your care plan calls for.

Every reptile eats differently. Some need daily salads with specific greens. Others eat once a week. I'll maintain your feeding routine and follow your directions on portions, timing, and supplements.

Reptile Handling and Interaction

​

Some reptiles do well with regular handling as part of their socialization. Bearded dragons, for example, often benefit from daily interaction that keeps them comfortable around people.

​

If your care plan includes handling, I follow your instructions for how, when, and how long. If your reptile does better with hands-off care, I respect that. You set the approach, and I stick to it.

Amphibian Sitting - Frogs, Toads & More

​

I also provide in-home pet sitting for frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, and other common amphibian pets, including red-eyed tree frogs, White's tree frogs, dart frogs, fire belly toads, Argentine horned frogs, and other species.

​

Amphibians absorb water and toxins directly through their skin. That means water quality, humidity, and handler hygiene all require careful management. 

​

I use gloves or barrier methods when handling is necessary, and I keep strict hygiene practices between enclosures.

 

For bioactive setups, I pay attention to enclosure balance without disrupting the established microfauna. I monitor substrate moisture, water quality, misting schedules, and feeding routines based on your care plan.

 

A Hicksville Sitter with Real Exotic Pet Experience

Before founding Bird Girl Pet Services, I worked with exotic veterinarians. That background gave me hands-on experience with reptiles and an eye for subtle signs that something might need attention, like changes in appetite, waste, shedding, or activity level.

​

I'm trained in reptile emergency first aid through Pet Emergency Education, CPR and First Aid certified through Pet Tech, and I'm a Certified Professional Pet Sitter through Pet Sitters International.

Reptile Boarding and Nail Trims

​

If you'd prefer your reptile to board while you travel, I offer reptile boarding out of my Hicksville home. Boarding guests are housed in my own enclosures with species-appropriate heating, UVB lighting, and misting. 

​

A wellness exam from a qualified exotic vet is required before any boarding stay. I also offer nail trims for small reptiles as part of my grooming services.

Getting Started with Reptile Sitting Services

Before your first visit, I schedule a consultation to go over your pet's setup, feeding routine, and any health or behavior details I should know about.

​

From there, I build a care plan based on your instructions, and we set your visit schedule.

 

During your trip, I follow that plan at every visit. If anything changes, I contact you right away.
